Target, known for its recognizable red bullseye logo, is one of the largest discount retailers in the United States. It started in 1902 as Goodfellow Dry Goods, renamed Dayton Dry Goods the following year, and later became the Dayton Company in 1911. The first Target store opened in 1962 in Roseville, Minnesota. The company eventually merged with J.L. Hudson Company, forming the Dayton Hudson Corporation.
Target quickly became the company’s primary revenue generator. By 1979, Target’s annual sales had soared to $1 billion. The first SuperTarget store, which included a grocery, pharmacy, restaurant, and photography studio, opened in Omaha, Nebraska, in 1990. The company officially rebranded to Target in 2000.
Over the years, Target has evolved into a leader in the discount retail sector. Headquartered in Minneapolis, Minnesota, the company operates 1,926 stores across the United States and ranked 367th on the 2020 Fortune 500 list of the largest US companies by revenue.
